Marbella’s beachside promenade.

Essentials

Getting There The main bus link is between Málaga and Marbella, with the Empresa Portillo (90-214-31-44; www.ctsa-portillo.com) running 14 buses a day. The trip takes 1 hour and 25 minutes and costs 5.15€ one-way. Madrid and Barcelona each have three daily buses to Marbella. The bus station is located on the outskirts of Marbella on Avenida Trapiche, a 5-minute ride from the center of town.

If you’re driving, Marbella is the first major resort as you head east on the N-340/E-15 from Algeciras.

Visitor Information The tourist office, Glorieta de la Fontanilla s/n (95-277-14-42; www.marbella.es), is open Monday to Friday 9:30am to 9pm, Saturday 10am to 2pm. Another tourist office with the same hours is on the Plaza de los Naranjos (95-277-46-93).

Shopping

Some other Andalusian village may inspire you to buy handicrafts (particularly pottery, woodcarvings, or wrought iron), but Marbella’s international glamour might incite in you so much insecurity about your wardrobe that you’ll want to rush out to accessorize. Should you suddenly feel underdressed, head for Old Town, where there are many fashion outlets.

If art is your passion, tour the galleries that pepper the town. You’ll spot high-rolling investors picking up contemporary treasures on shopping sprees. One of Marbella’s most appealing art galleries lies in the Old Town: Galleria d’Arte Van Gestel, Plaza General Franco 11 (95-277-48-19). And if your search for fine art carries over to Puerto Banús, consider the contemporary artwork displayed at Sammer Gallery, Av. de Julio Iglesias 3, Las Terrazas de Banús, Local 10–16 (95-281-29-95). If you’d like to purchase some of Andalusia’s regional ceramics, your best bet is Cerámica San Nicolás, Plaza de la Iglesia 1 (95-277-05-46).

On Saturday morning, forget the shops and head with the locals to Nueva Andalucía flea market. Everything is likely to be on sale, from Spanish leather goods to local pottery and embroideries.
